Cat-Eye Nails

Magnetic gel. Moving light.

Cat-eye is gel polish filled with fine magnetic particles. A magnet held over each nail before the colour cures draws them into a band of light, and the band slides across the nail as the hand turns. At our Calgary studio it is added as nail art to a manicure, overlay or extension set.

What cat-eye nails are

Cat-eye gel carries fine magnetic particles suspended in the colour. Before the layer is cured, the technician holds a magnet over the nail; the particles gather where the magnet pulls and reflect light as a bright band. Once cured, the band is fixed, yet it seems to move: tilt the hand and the light travels across the nail.

That movement is the design. A plain cat-eye set needs no painting to look finished.

The effects

The finish depends on where the magnet is held, for how long and how many times. We work with professional magnetic gel polishes and more than one magnet, so these effects can be chosen or combined:

  • Single ray. One band down the length of each nail, the classic cat-eye, as on Deep Green Cat-Eye on Long Almond Nails. The same band can run through the centre of the nail, as on Burgundy Cat-Eye with the Flare Down the Centre.
  • Diagonal. The band crosses the nail at an angle; the purple hand of One Hand Green, One Hand Purple: A Two-Colour Cat-Eye shows it.
  • Multi-ray. Several narrower bands on one nail, from more than one pass of the magnet.
  • Velvet. The particles are spread rather than gathered, so the whole nail glows softly instead of carrying one line.
  • Glass. A sheer cat-eye, so the light seems to sit deep inside the colour.
  • Layered. Cat-eye built in more than one layer for a deeper, volumetric shine.

A cat-eye base also takes a French edge, hand-painted line work or a single accent nail. Several of the sets on this page combine them.

Colours from our studio

The base colour sets the mood; the magnet decides where the light falls.

How a cat-eye set is booked and priced

Cat-eye is nail art, not a separate service. It goes on top of the manicure and coating you book, such as a Gel Manicure or a set of Nail Extensions, and is priced as Simple Nail Art & Design, including most sets with a small accent. More detailed work over the cat-eye moves a set to Medium Nail Art & Design.

Every look above shows its full price and books in one step. For a different cat-eye, book your manicure with the design and add a photo of the look you want.

How long it lasts

Cat-eye is a gel polish, so it wears like the coating beneath it: two to three weeks on a thin levelling base, and three to four weeks over Gel Overlay or extensions. Long nails often need an earlier return, usually within two and a half to three weeks.

Other effects are on our Chrome Nails and French Nails pages, and every design tier is on Nail Art & Designs.

Good to know

Cat-eye nails: questions

What are cat-eye nails?

Nails coated with cat-eye gel polish, which contains fine magnetic particles. Before the colour is cured, a magnet draws the particles into a band of light that appears to move as the hand turns. The effect is inside the colour, not a foil or a sticker.

Is cat-eye a separate service?

No. Cat-eye is nail art added to a manicure, overlay or extension booking. It is priced as Simple Nail Art & Design; more detailed work over it moves a set to Medium Nail Art & Design.

Can I have cat-eye on short nails?
Why does cat-eye cost more than a plain colour?

Each nail is set with the magnet before it is cured, one nail at a time, and the band is placed by hand. That time is what the design tier prices; the gel colour underneath is priced as usual.

How long do cat-eye nails last?

As long as the coating beneath them: two to three weeks on a thin levelling base, and three to four weeks over Gel Overlay or extensions. Long nails often need an earlier return, usually within two and a half to three weeks.

Can I bring a photo of the cat-eye I want?

Yes. Add a photo and a note when you book, and the technician sees them before your appointment.
