Your own nails, reinforced and shaped.
Your own nails, reinforced and shaped.
A builder gel overlay on your own nails — no tips, nothing glued on. The plate is prepared dry, then builder gel is placed to build an apex, reinforce the stress zone and carry short, medium or long length. Three to four weeks of wear, with a refill within 28 days (21 days for long nails).
A builder gel overlay — the thing most people search for as BIAB nails — is a layer of builder gel placed over your natural nail to reinforce it. No tips, nothing glued on: the gel carries and shapes your own nail at short, medium or long. The plate is prepared dry, a flexible base goes down, then the builder gel is placed to build a proper apex and thicken the stress zone where nails actually break.
The appointment includes:
Booked as Flawless Russian Manicure with Gel Overlay added — 40–55 min for the manicure plus 15–25 min for the overlay, priced together in the booking system and shown in the table below. Three to four weeks of wear, with a refill within 28 days (21 days for long nails).
The e-file question deserves a straight answer: what hurts is technique, never the tool. Our technician holds an eighty-hour e-file certificate from KASYA Nail Club, signed off in 2023, and the natural plate is barely filed here — light vibration, short contact, nothing sharp and nothing hot. Tell us and we stop. Your kit is washed, ultrasound-cleaned, disinfected and steam-sterilized, then stays sealed until the pouch is opened at your table.
BIAB stands for "builder in a bottle". It is The GelBottle's trademark for their builder gel, and because that brand named the category early, the acronym became the way people search for it. In Canada you will also see the same service called a builder gel overlay, a strong base overlay, or simply gel strengthening — and they all describe the same idea: builder gel worked over the natural nail rather than a tip glued onto it.
We do not use the original BIAB™. We use builder gels from the Ukrainian professional lines we work with — DARK, DNKa' and LUNAmoon — and the material is chosen for the length, flexibility and condition of your natural nails rather than fixed in advance. That is the honest version of what most Calgary salons advertise as BIAB.
It also sets the limits. A builder gel overlay reinforces, and it can carry length — short, medium or long — but it builds that length on your own nail rather than on a form, and it does not heal anything. What protects the natural nail is technique, not material: minimal filing of the natural plate, sharp bits replaced regularly, no pressure and no overheating, correct architecture, full removal of any lifting, and removal by material rather than by tearing — with a safe thin layer left rather than filing down to the natural nail. The aim after removal is an even plate, without deep ridges, painful thinning or torn layers.
Short and small nails are where this work shows most. The plate is levelled, the shape and architecture refined, and the builder gel chosen for your nails, so the result looks natural rather than thick. If a set lifts or chips, the technician sees how it wore and may adjust the base, gel or method at your Flawless Gel Refill.
Expect three to four weeks of wear. A Gel Overlay refill is available within 28 days of the last Gel Overlay application or refill for short or medium nails, or within 21 days for long nails. After that, book a new manicure with Gel Overlay rather than a refill. The technician assesses the nails before starting, but cannot extend the refill window. Long nails often need an earlier return, usually within two and a half to three weeks.
Gel manicure or gel overlay — what is the difference? A gel manicure is colour over a thin base that levels the nail. A gel overlay is builder gel worked into the plate itself — reinforcing it, and carrying length the nail can hold, rather than colouring it — a different job, and the two can be booked together as Gel Manicure with Gel Overlay added.
A builder gel overlay is not a separate service on our menu, because the material is a choice the technician makes rather than a product you buy. It is Flawless Russian Manicure with Gel Overlay added, booked and priced as one appointment. The current total is in the table below — a real number rather than a "from" figure.
Which material goes on is decided at the table, and the ladder is short. A rubber base levels and gives minimal support on short nails. Builder, hard or jelly gel reinforces harder and rebuilds architecture. Polygel is the strongest, for high load or complex shape correction. All of them are the same booking; only the material changes. Take the length past what your own nail can carry — past long — and it stops being an overlay and becomes a Full Set on upper forms.
Coating we applied is removed free when you book a new service with us. Another salon's work is Complex Removal — twenty to forty minutes, paid in full, new clients included. Our five-day fix covers chips, lifting and premature coating failure from the appointment date, capped at three nails. Book a pedicure into the same visit and the pair runs as one combo appointment at five percent off.

Choose Gel Overlay when you want your own nails reinforced: the technician chooses the material after assessing the nail, and the overlay can build some length, normally short through long. Book a Flawless Gel Nail Extensions — Full Set for length beyond long, or to rebuild a missing part of a nail on an upper form.
Book a Gel Refill while your Gel Overlay or extension set is within its refill window: up to 28 days for short or medium nails, 21 days for long and 17 days for extra-long, counted from your last refill or new set to your appointment date. Regular refills keep the set in shape, and a refill costs less than a new full set. After the window, a Gel Overlay restarts as a new Gel Overlay and extensions as a New Full Set. If we can’t confirm your last visit or nail length, the studio checks before confirming. We refill only work we built: another salon’s extensions, Gel-X or acrylic are removed as a paid Complex Removal first.
It starts with an assessment of your nails’ thickness, flexibility and any damage. The builder gel is then chosen for your length and nail condition: we use builder gels from DARK, DNKa’ and LUNAmoon rather than the original BIAB™. The work itself is gentle on the plate: minimal filing, no pressure or overheating, and removal by material, never by tearing, leaving a safe thin layer rather than filing down to the natural nail. The honest limit: it is a coating that needs upkeep, and it does not heal or treat a nail.
Three to four weeks of wear. To keep it in shape, book your refill within 28 days for short or medium nails, 21 for long and 17 for extra-long (Gel Overlay goes up to long). If a nail chips or lifts within five days of your appointment, we fix it free, up to three nails; the exclusions are in our policies.
Every service is priced with its time on our prices page and in online booking. Standard extra length, including extra-long, books at those prices; custom lengths beyond extra-long are assessed and priced at the appointment. Removing another salon’s work is a separate paid Complex Removal. Before any work starts, your estimated total and time are confirmed with you.
